“New to Homeschooling? Here’s How to Start with Confidence.”

Simple steps, real support, and the clarity you need to begin your homeschooling journey today. You CAN do this!

“How to Get Started with Homeschooling in 3 Simple Steps”

  1. Know the Law in Your State

  • The Homeschool Legal Defense Association is where you can find homeschool laws for all 50 states and US territories on our interactive legal map. It provides detailed information about how to homeschool legally in your state, how to withdraw your child from public school, and more.

If you’re an HSLDA member, you can also use our state-specific forms and documents to simplify any homeschool paperwork you may have. Scroll down to the bottom of your state legal page to find your state-specific forms.

2. Choose a Homeschooling Style That Fits

  • Charlotte Mason, Unschooling, Unit studies…there are so many different options when it comes to homeschool but how do you know which one will work for your child? This short PDF Guide, The Ultimate Guide to Homeschool Styles, by Kelly George and the Fearless Homeschool is a fantastic resource to break it down!

3. Plan Your First Week & Gather Basic Supplies

  • It can be so hard not to get sucked into all those beautiful, dreamy Pinterest homeschool rooms that flood your screen, but I promise you do NOT need all that to create an inviting and encouraging space for your kiddos to learn! Your supplies WILL grow over time but there is no reason to break the bank or stress yourself from day 1. YOU. HAVE. TIME.
  • Consider the age of your kids and grab a supply list from a local store for back to school essentials. Those are the basic things you will need and some simple organization boxes or even cups to hold pens & pencils. The Dollar store can be your best friend! With some paper, markers, crayons, and glue you are off to a great start. Now just plan a time each day to set aside with your child, based on which learning style you’ve decided to try, and do some learning. —No need for the flash or fluff, just slow and purposeful time spent together.
  • And if it’s a pretty day, make it even more fun by going outside for your lesson. After all, you have the FREEDOM to teach and learn your way!!
