I love summer! Here in Alabama that statement can stir up quite a lot heated debates (pun intended), depending on which side of the seasonal fence you’re standing on. Even though Alabama summers include sweltering temperatures that soar into the upper 90s, and humidity levels so high you feel like you can pick up your feet and swim right through the air, I still get so much joy from what the season brings.

There are two words that come to mind when I think of summer, and they both make me smile because of all they encompass- FREEDOM and PLANTS. Now I’m not just talking about the fourth of July, and while that certainly ties into it, the freedom I’m speaking of has to do directly with families and children. And the plants you ask, well, I love plants. Gardens, veggies, flowers, potted plants, I love them all! When summer comes that’s when the garden comes alive, and I get to see the magic happen- a wonderful transformation. I remember how the seeds I planted in faith in the early season will bring me great reward in due time if I stay diligent, work the soil, and have patience. I have the freedom to grow my own plants, and thanks to the freedom of time, I can enjoy the fruits of my hard work.

You Can Have Freedom
Homeschooling and plants have a lot in common. They both take time and patience, and the reward is so sweet. Eleven years ago I embarked on the journey of teaching my children at home, because I wanted freedom. I wanted to plant freedom in my life, in my home, and reap all the benefits and joys that would follow.
After being on this journey with all four of my children, and working with countless other families who have also embraced this lifestyle, I’ve learned that nothing can replace freedom! What started out as a small seed of hope, was then a chance I took and planted, watered, and continue to work on year after year as my kids grow. Just as you have to prepare for a garden, make decisions about what to plant, when to plant, where to plant, and so on- so it is with homeschooling your children. It takes time, but growth and goodness abound!

Choosing this lifestyle will allow you to live free. You plant the seeds in faith, work the grounds of their hearts and minds and stay dedicated to your children. As time passes there will eventually be a harvest.
Yes, it is hard work, but I remind my kids often that anything good worth having takes time and effort.
It is worth sacrificing so you can live this life.
It is worth your time.
It is worth every moment that you will treasure and store up in your heart for the short, precious few years you have with your children as you watch them learn and grow!
